The truth about giving up!

I’ve spent the last few months decluttering, searching deeply, asking important questions from myself and my life both personally and professionally. What I realised, is that there was one main thing I had to do, what was that?

I had to…

Give up.

Give up …assumptions.
Give up …wasting time.
Give up …seeking approval.
Give up …complaining (still working on that one).
Give up …spending time with people, places or things which don’t light me up.

That last one, has led to this piece, but let me say a little about the others first.

Assumptions ~ That others have it better, easier, by chance, entitlement or through something I assume I don’t have.

Wasting time ~ You’re likely bored hearing about the 5am stuff, but it’s been huge for me and even more huge thanks to Shaa Wasmund for this golden technique.

Seeking approval ~ checking with anyone else other than myself before doing anything, this is like kryptonite to confidence.

Complaining ~ about situations, events or occurrences especially complaining to a person who can’t put it right or do anything to alleviate or resolve my complaint.

Initially, “Give up spending time with people, places or things which don’t light me up” , looks pretty harsh, but here’s what it actually meant for me.

I decided this summer that I wanted to majorly declutter, I’ve decluttered before but this time I felt compelled and started from a place of, “How does the person who is x,y,z live, act or be? I started to look at my belongings and as I picked the items up, I asked myself a simple question, I asked myself how that item made me feel? The answers which came back were surprising.

You see, when you look at items in that way, you experience the overdue memories held, times when things ’should have been’, the clothing which when you wore it, made you feel less than, and the places you revisit which made your heart sink. That top I couldn’t wear comfortably without my bra straps showing and that favourite piece which had a little hole in it which I spent the whole time trying to disguise.

The books which sat on my shelf, got moved around from the marital home, into the separated and newly single pad and the really costly storage unit they lived in in between. The designer purse, a gift from bygone people, the copious notebooks filled with detailed notes, big dreams and careful plans, the pairs of shoes, everywhere especially the 10+ pairs in my car, which had itself become a storage unit and stark reminder of a life I no longer lived, a position I no longer held, a sector crippled into collapse, a reminder of the redundancy as my role became a victim of the economic financial ‘crisis’.

The bit that others don’t always get or think about though, are the people…

That final one, “Give up spending time with people, places or things which don’t light me up”

Initially “Give up spending time with people, which don’t light me up” looks pretty harsh, but here’s what it actually meant for me

We all know at least one person who can be either negative, spiteful, embarrassing, energy draining or unsupportive and we just don’t feel great around them, yet it’s common for people to choose to stay connected with those people in life and online and it was some of those traits I looked at with the filter of “how does the person who does x,y,z live, act or be?

Here’s the rub.

If you’re spending time with people who are negative, spiteful, embarrassing, energy draining, unsupportive or something else, you’ll feel these things more often at a time when it's likely you want to feel differently. When you’re stretching and looking to do new things you want to surround yourself with people who will cheer you on, support you and are completely in tune with what you’re looking to achieve. If not, you’ll find your confidence, tenacity, positivity, and will, being challenged. Sometimes, it’s ok to take a step back while staying in relationship with them, it's also important to know when to vet what you share with them too.

If they’re so negative and don’t get that stepping back piece, that’s ok too, you don’t need to absorb what’s not going to support you, and there’s no need to spend time or energy correcting, judging or 'fixing' them.

During the last round of decluttering, when I realised that my car mostly sat parked on the side of the road in London, was filled with old memories of an old lifestyle, and didn’t fill me with joy.

I gave that up too.

Once you're ready to step up and be even more visible there's a whole heap of people who are ready to support you, including me! Who do you want to be?

Dear Visibility Seeker,

When I worked in financial services as a National Training Manager back in 2006, I was added to lots of different email groups, in fact I’d regularly get in excess of 300 emails a day and one thing in particular really caught my attention.

I’d receive emails saying, it’s my birthday, I’ve got cakes in the kitchen, but why did it catch my attention?

Because, I worked out on the road as a National Manager, and could be found in England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales, so getting an email which said, there are cakes in the kitchen in when I was a good few hundred miles away, made me feel like I was missing out!

It was my birthday in June, so the cakes in my kitchen started with a short and sweet video to help you get your products and services out there. On here, I'm letting you know with a little advanced warning so that you’re not a million miles away!

To Receive your Visibility Raising treats click here

It wasn’t about the cakes being hundreds of miles away, it was really about knowing that I had emails to read and that a fair few of them had to be read, they would probably not even apply to me but I’d need to take some sort of action before I could delete them.

These days the stress so many business owners and ambitious employees experience when being visible is exactly the same, I hear:

~ How do I ensure people see my emails and know about what I'm doing?

~ Does visibility apply to me yet? I'm about to rebrand... update my website... start my business.. go for a promotion... change what I'm doing...?

~ How do I get people interested in, ready and actually using what I share?

The truth is there are lots of different ways to be seen, heard and noticed and it depends on you, because doing visibility my way isn’t your way and your way isn’t necessarily everyone else’s way either.

Look out for your 'cakes'*, I'll be sharing them in the next couple of days

*PLEASE NOTE: The cakes I talk about are metaphoric, have you ever tried putting cakes in the post?

No didn't think so!

Thank you for inspiring me, now go forth, be seen, be heard and be visible!

Monday Motivation - What Are You Tolerating?

If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in the dark with a mosquito. - Betty Reese

In 2008 I recognised the stigma attached with a brand new week, often Mondays were met with dread, a feeling of overwhelm and a sense of being stuck or in a grind.

Not the best way to set yourself up for the day, let alone the week!

So I found ways to send motivational messages around the office to lift people up. In 2010 when I started my business, I was really keen to keep this up as a service to those who wanted it.

Today, I hope to bring the motivation to life, by creating the 10 minute space for you to activate your ability to today... Stop putting up with stuff!

____________

This week, I want to start by asking you a question, well two really...

What are you tolerating?

Or put another way,

What are you putting up with?

These questions are especially relevant, if you have big dreams, big plans, big ambitions to do the things in life we love, and this week I've heard a lot of different people, some are friends, some are coaching clients, all people who want to make a change to something in their life. They want to do something different, but somehow have felt like they can't.

Explore. Dream. Discover.  Written on a card given to me by a friend a year ago

So let's start with those 3 questions, yes you'll have to watch the video at around 3:50 to hear them. I then recommend writing down the answers on paper in a journal, a piece of paper or even the back of a envelope! Write it down, it's really important.

1) Is there a conversation that you need to have and you're avoiding right now? Is it with yourself or someone else or both?

2) What are you pretending not to know?

3) What aren't you being honest about with yourself?

Watch this weeks video to hear about my own personal account of back in 1993 and how I almost stopped myself. This is equally effective for any situation even those more seemingly serious work ones!

Once, and only once you've written down those answers, then go on to describe the situation or outcome you actually want.

Let me know how you use this nugget!

Can I ask you a question?

Ever wondered how to fully stretch yourself to your full potential?

A few days ago, as I was (quite literally) walking up the street, I shared this video live with the lovely Video Visibility VIBErs in our secret Facebook group.

So I figured it would be a great idea to share it with you too. It really helped me and apparently helped them too.

PS In terms of video visibility, I would ALWAYS recommend that you turn your camera sideways.

That way, you don't get those ugly black lines which squash your face and make you look like a teeny tiny version of you, especially as it's likely you're watch this from a teeny tiny phone screen.

Here's that video, it's seconds long!

::: Are You a Visibility Ghost? :::

Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.

Ghostly Goings On...

Oh Yes! I’m jumping on the Halloween bandwagon, but with good cause...
Are you being a visibility ghost? Do you even believe in them or know what they are?
You’ll know if you're a visibility ghost when you;
~ See other people and businesses getting out there, but when it comes to you, you freeze with fright and can’t get started or maintain momentum.
~ Hear other peoples great ideas, phrases or expressions and your sixth sense feels like the best way forward is to model theirs until you’ve found yours
~ Often feel like you’ve got too much to do to get out there, and it feels frightful to keep out there and when you try to keep up with it all, you wear yourself out.
Halloween Health Warning...
Before I dispense 3 quick pain killer cures, know that painkillers temporarily fix the pain, but in order to permanently, solve the underlying cause diagnostic action is required and I’ll let you know how to get a free diagnosis after you taken the painkillers.

Cauldron Cure 1
Fright and lack of momentum in visibility, often come from not feeling 100% confident with what you’re putting out there or not knowing exactly how, for you or your business. The painkiller cure is to get your leverage lenses on and go for the smallest thing that would make the biggest difference to you. Decide, pick and focus on that first.

Cauldron Cure 2
Appreciating or resonating with someone else’s great idea, means that their message speaks to you. When a person attempts to recreate someone else’s work, it contains someone else vibe and energy and means that no matter how hard you try it just doesn’t fly.
So the painkilling cure here is to explore, your work, what you do and how you do it uniquely. Focus on what you do with your clients and how you do it. The pattern will soon emerge, and you’ll realise that you have your own way, your own vibe and your own step by step process. It’ll also mean that your frustration levels will drop when you think that they can’t hear you, and their interest in what you do will soar as you find your voice.
Cauldron Cure 3
At the risk of sounding boring, having a little structure in place will most definitely provide a calm and enjoyable work life which is in harmony with your home and private life too. Structure has allowed me to be free to create and work without the ‘writers block’, feeling stuck or not knowing what to post, when.
Painkiller Work with the time you actually have, so if you’re a working mother with a family to look after, establish when you have specific time to work. If you’re growing a business and working at the same time you’ll need to create time to do both or maybe you’re expanding in your veteran business, and you require a framework so you feel less overwhelmed.
Plan your activities in blocks, for example, writing, admin, calls, etc so that you’re not switching from task to task within a working day. The also allows you to harness and use your energy, in the best way, for you, for your life and your business.
Those cauldron cures are effective pain killers, but once you have a diagnosis you’ll be able to uncover the underlying cause, to your visibility ghostly ways, no tricks just treats!

Visibility without the Baloney!

As with many things in life, in order to move closer to our dreams, aims and ambitions, it really helps if we can get a clear sense of what we really want.

Visibility is exactly the same. You may want to be known by thousands internationally speaking in world stages or you may want to run a successful local business locally in your town or city, while making enough money to treat yourself and your children to treats.

Let’s start with a few myth busters!

1)   “To be visible, you have to be ‘famous’”

Here’s why that’s baloney: There’s a difference between being known as the go-to person for the thing that you do and being ‘big brother’ famous for not really doing a lot!

Fastest Path to busting loose = STOP comparing yourself to those you admire, they have their visibility journey and you have yours!

2)   “Before working on your visibility, you have to have a perfect website.”

Absolute poppycock!!! Once the people you want to work with, sell to, share your services and products with know who you are, they’ll find you and send people to you.

TRUE FACT, in 2010, without a Facebook page, website or business cards I bagged myself a contract which was worth over £16k.  So what I’m saying is: shine! Your business and your passion and people will find you. With that income, you can get your website built, business cards made, and promotional material created.

3)   “Fake-it-till-ya-make-it”

This is a sure fire way to make yourself appear incongruent with who you really are.

Acting “As If”, however is a whole different ball game! When you fake it, people don’t know why. They can smell that something is off. It shows up in your body language, in what you say and how you act. Worse still, they work with you and end up dissatisfied, giving you terrible PR!

Acting “As If” usually means you behave as if you’re at the place you want to be, in the way you want to show up. It means that you’re happy to share your worth, integrity and sincerity.

In order to start on your visibility path, let’s perform a quick audit to get really clear on where you are now. This will enable you to focus on what your next steps will be.

Remember: this is best written down with pen and paper first. Please know there are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers here.

1. Where are you now in terms of visibility?
2. Do your relatives know what you do?
3. How visible are you on-line on Social media, and how many followers do you have?
4. Do those closest to you understand the value that you offer?
5. How do you answer the 'What do you do?' questions?

Be totally honest with yourself, as you do not need to share your answers with anyone else. This plan gives you your 'roadmap' on where to go from here, showing what's really possible.
